Senator Humphries pleads for Public Service jobs

Liberal Senator for the ACT, Gary Humphries has today slammed the Rudd Labor Government for leaving the public service underresourced.

It has been revealed that the Rudd Government has missed the deadline to answer in excess of 800 questions on notice on some of the nation’s most pressing issues – ranging from budget measures to government announcements.

Senator Humphries said “this demonstrates that the Commonwealth Public Service is struggling under the Rudd Government’s cuts.

“As the 800 unanswered questions come from a range of departments, this yet again shows that the whole public service is overstretched and underfunded.

“Barely able to cope with the present efficiency dividend, the public service now has to cope with the announcement of another round of the razor gang, with the strong possibility that the Rudd Labor Government will slash jobs again which will in turn leave the public service even worse off.

“When it comes to running the country in a difficult economic climate, we need a well resourced public service. More cuts are the last thing that an already overstretched public service needs.

“The Rudd Labor Government went to the election promising greater accountability and transparency – they have clearly failed the Australian people.

“I strongly urge the Rudd Government to stop cutting public service numbers, especially given that the APS isn’t coping as it is!” Senator Humphries concluded.
